Playdough is one of those classic toys that every generation loves and plays with.  This homemade playdough recipe is not only my favorite, but it allows for endless customization options.  You can change the color, the scent, the texture, there are so many possibilities!  The hands-on creation time for the playdough is under 10 minutes and even with cooling time, your kids can be playing in under an hour.  Whip some up during nap time and have a quiet house for the afternoon while you kids are occupied with their new playdough!

If you’d like to change things up, check out my eBook with 20 different playdough customization recipes here.

I have a step by step YouTube video here if you’d like to watch the process.

Supplies:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Additional ingredients to customize:
    • I choose a color; food coloring or tempera paint work great for this
    • A scent; essential oil blends are perfect
    • And a mix in; glitter works (although, I personally hate glitter and think it’s the devil), sand, rice, corn kernels, beans, anything that will mix in well!

Step 1:

Mix flour, salt, and cream of tartar in a large saucepan.

Step 2:

Gradually stir in boiling water, vegetable oil, and customizing ingredients.

Step 3:

Cook and stir over medium heat until a ball forms. This is pretty quick, 3-4 minutes.

Step 4:

Remove from heat, allow to rest until still warm, but workable, about 30 minutes. Be careful as the dough may still have hot spots.

Step 5:

Knead on wax paper or silpat until the color, scent, and glitter are uniform.

Step 6:

Play!  Make sure the playdough is cool enough for little hands and turn it over for playtime!
